Since the first underwater images by Hans Hass and Jacques Cousteau in the 1950s, cetacean photography has become an art in its own right, and a major scientific tool. Individual photo-identification (fluke and dorsal fin patterns), documentation of rare behaviours, public awareness, conservation lobbying: images are now inseparable from cetology.
This directory brings together the most widely recognised contemporary photographers working on cetaceans and marine mammals around the world. From Flip Nicklin (the “godfather” of whale photography at National Geographic) to young French talents such as Greg Lecoeur and Pierre Robert de Latour, by way of the pioneers of sperm whale photography Tony Wu and Bryant Austin.
Photography is a scientific tool: explore citizen science (Happywhale, photo-ID), tracking technologies, documentaries and the directory of whale watching operators.
