Who we are

A passionate team working for knowledge and for the conservation of cetaceans

Our mission at Cetace.info

To make the 80 cetacean species that inhabit our oceans visible, understandable and accessible.

Cetace.info is a collaborative project born of a shared wish to make whales, dolphins, killer whales, sperm whales and porpoises better known.

Our aim is to build a living database bringing together for each species.

At the meeting point of science, education and wonder, our site aims to become a reference platform for everyone with an interest in cetaceans, beginners and the more experienced alike.

An adventure rooted in observation

The story of Cetace.info begins in 2006, after several observation trips in the Bay of Biscay. Out of those first encounters with cetaceans came a wider project: to pass on the knowledge gained in the field. Between 2007 and 2012, Éric Garletti and Nathalie Tapie ran more than 30 naturalist observation courses at sea, at a rate of 3 to 5 courses each summer. Each 3-day session combined immersion at sea, the passing on of scientific knowledge and education in biodiversity. Those years laid the foundations of our approach: to observe, to understand and to share with precision and wonder.

A first passionate relaunch in 2020

In 2020, a decisive meeting with Sophie Preato gave the project fresh momentum. Together we launched a new series of naturalist expeditions departing from Hendaye for the Capbreton Canyon. This underwater canyon, among the deepest in Europe, is home to a great diversity of species. These survey trips make it possible not only to renew our links with field observation, but also to strengthen our mission of public awareness. They go hand in hand with data collection, science communication and a commitment to the protection of cetaceans.

Today, Cetace.info aims to become a point of reference

For those who wish to explore the world of cetaceans with high standards, curiosity and respect, we are building an editorial space where scientific rigour meets a passion for the field and a concern for teaching. Every species profile, every article, every illustration is conceived as a tool for knowledge and for passing it on. The project is a living one: it grows with each sighting, each encounter and each contribution. To know is already to protect. To understand is to begin to get involved. Welcome to this shared exploration of the world of cetaceans.
